Geroge Reddy Life Story | Geroge Reddy Biopic | Real Telugu Hero | Real Hero
In our textbooks, we have learned about the lives of great individuals like Mahatma Gandhi and Alluri Sitarama Raju. Today, I am going to tell you about a Telugu Che Guevara, a figure many of us are not familiar with from our school days or textbooks. He questioned wrongdoers and, as a consequence, was brutally killed with not one, not ten, but a gruesome sixty knife wounds. His name was George Reddy. A combination of Einstein's brilliance and Che Guevara's revolutionary spirit, there is no doubt that George Reddy was an exceptional intellectual and revolutionary.
George Reddy was a revolutionary student leader in Telangana. A lecturer who taught him once remarked that if George Reddy had lived, he had the potential to win a Nobel Prize in Physics from India. I am proud to share the life story of such a remarkable individual.
George Reddy was born on January 15, 1947, in Palghat, Madras Presidency, which is now part of Kerala. He was the fourth child of Challa Raghunatha Reddy from Chittoor district and Leela Varghese from Travancore. His parents met at Madras Presidency College. Raghunatha Reddy completed his B.A. Honours, and Leela Varghese completed her degree in Chemistry and pursued an M.A. The couple had five children. Their eldest, Don Reddy, completed B.Ed. and settled in Orissa. Their second son, Carl Reddy, became an I.A.S officer. Their daughter, Joy Reddy, did an M.A. in Linguistics and worked at the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysore. George Reddy was their fourth child, and their youngest was Cyril Reddy. The names themselves reflect the values of honesty and integrity instilled in them from childhood.
**George Reddy's Education**
George Reddy's primary education took place in Bangalore and Chennai. He studied fifth to seventh grades at Infant Jesus High School in Tangasseri, Quilon District, and eighth and ninth grades at Don Bosco High School in Egmore, Chennai. Later, in 1961-62, he studied for some time at St. Gabriel's High School in Kazipet. His family then moved to Hyderabad, where he completed his tenth grade at St. Paul's High School. He completed his P.U.C. from Nizam College, equivalent to today's Intermediate, and in 1964, joined Osmania University Science College for B.Sc. He completed his second and third years of degree at Nizam College in Hyderabad. He did his M.Sc. in Physics from Osmania University (OU) and briefly worked as a junior lecturer at A.V. College. He earned a gold medal from Osmania University in Physics. A professor from Bombay, who evaluated his answer paper, was so impressed with his simple solutions to complex physics problems that he personally visited OU to meet George Reddy, proclaiming him a genius.
Once, after a small campus quarrel, George was rusticated for a year. He did not waste this time but read hundreds of books, solved Andrey Markov's math equations, and wrote a detailed book on Berkeley Physics. He studied valuable works such as "At War with Asia" by Noam Chomsky, "The Science of Logic" by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" by Alex Haley. He was greatly influenced by the revolutionary Che Guevara and read Guevara's "Guerrilla Warfare" and "Bolivian Diary."
George's revolutionary fervor was fueled by the dark forces of campus violence, oppression, and feudalism. Unable to tolerate these injustices, George, with his revolutionary ideals, emerged as a leader, uniting fellow students and becoming the Telugu Che Guevara. Influenced by historical revolutions like the French Revolution, the heroic Vietnam War, the Naxalbari and Srikakulam peasant rebellions, and Che Guevara's exploits in Bolivia, Osmania University became the birthplace of his revolutionary spirit. He began his fight against physical assaults on students, caste discrimination, and dominant attitudes.
Most students in the campus were from rural backgrounds and marginalized communities. Despite the social, political, and cultural differences between them, George urged his fellow students to see everyone equally. With like-minded friends, he formed the Progressive Democratic Students (PDS) organization to bring their thoughts to the people. In the 1970s, political groups began entering student politics, creating an undemocratic atmosphere in Osmania University. This group, known as the Lumpen Gang, engaged in activities like harassing girls, ragging, and even assaulting lecturers and professors. Until then, PDS was limited to university issues, but under George’s leadership, it began addressing public issues in Hyderabad as well. This led the government to arrest and harass PDS activists with false charges.
During this time, university elections were held. Previously, no one dared to oppose communal forces, but George Reddy changed the situation. This led to fierce competition between ABVP and PDS. In the 1972 OU campus elections, ABVP faced opposition, leading to a high-stakes election in the engineering college. This was on April 14, 1972, the day George Reddy was killed. ABVP candidate Lakhan Singh, along with rowdies, was waiting for George near the engineering college hostel. They attacked him with knives, killing him in front of several police officers, who were allegedly involved with political leaders and rowdies. Despite eyewitness accounts, the prosecution failed to prove the murder in court, and the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence.
Despite his brutal end, George Reddy's legacy of fighting for justice continued through the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU), which carried forward his slogan, "Jeena Hai Toh Marna Seekho, Kadam Kadam Par Ladna Seekho" (If you want to live, learn to die, learn to fight step by step).
George Reddy was attacked multiple times before his death. He practiced boxing daily, which saved his life on several occasions. Knowing he might lose his life for his activism, he continued to challenge wrongdoings in both university and active politics. I'm proud to have made this video about such a great revolutionary hero.
In recent times, we have seen biopics like "Mahanati," "Yatra," and "NTR Kathanayakudu" in the Telugu film industry. However, in 1990, a movie called "Alajadi" depicted some events from George Reddy's life. The 2004 film "Yuva," starring Surya, also drew inspiration from his life. Many other films have been made with similar backdrops, but the first complete biopic in Telugu about George Reddy was recently made. Sandeep Kumar, known for "Vangaveeti," played George Reddy in this movie. It is unfortunate that we learn about such figures only through movies and not through our education system. At least movies remain to tell us the truth.
Johar George Reddy Johar...
